The Toronto Italian Film Festival was launched in 1999. The Festival screens films by both new and established filmmakers, from Italy and Canada, as well as classics from legendary masters. It is an annual event not just for Italians, but for the community at large who love Italian cinema at its best. The presence of some of the films' stars and directors for question and answer sessions with the audience has become a much anticipated and exciting part of the Festival. Our Opening and Closing Galas, as well as our Cocktail Parties, are very much a focal point of the Festival and audiences enjoy the oppotunity to meet and schmooze with both visiting and local celebrities.

National Congress of Italian Canadians
The National Congress of Italian Canadians was founded in Ottawa in 1974 with the expressed purpose of unifying the then nearly one million Canadians of Italian origin from coast to coast to coast. From the moment it was founded, the Congress has sought to give the Italian Canadian community an effective national voice in all economic, social, and political issues affecting them. The Congress is the voice of all Italian Canadians. It cannot be thought of as an organization to be placed alongside others. It is sui generis. Indeed it fails in its purpose if it is regarded as merely another organization or association among the hundreds serving the Italian Canadian community. It is the national communal address, and is responsible to the entire Italian community of Canada.
The Order Sons of Italy of Canada
A fraternal organization of Canadians of Italian heritage, working together to achieve the following purposes:
SERVICE & CHARITY: To assist the needy, the ill, and disabled through financial support, the provision of housing, and other support programs.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: To encourage the active participation of our members in the political, social and economic life of our community; to participate in programs combatting discrimination, racism, and social injustice.
HERITAGE: To promote and preserve the Italian language, culture, and traditions in our country.
The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) is the largest and longest-established national organization for men and women of Italian heritage in the United States. Established in 1905 as a mutual aid society for the early Italian immigrants, today OSIA has more than 600,000 members and supporters and a network of more than 700 chapters coast to coast, making it the leading service and advocacy organization for the nation's estimated 26 million people of Italian descent.
Its missions include encouraging the study of Italian language and culture in American schools and universities; preserving Italian American traditions, culture, history and heritage; and promoting closer cultural relations between the United States and Italy.
The Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) is a private, philanthropic institution, established by OSIA in 1959. To date, the SIF has given more than $83 million to scholarships, medical research, cultural preservation, disaster relief, and other projects.
The Commission for Social Justice (CSJ) is the anti-defamation arm of OSIA. The CSJ is committed to fighting racism, prejudice, and the stereotyping of all races, religions and cultures.
OSIA's national headquarters is in Washington, D.C., near Capitol Hill and the various congressional office buildings. .
Fieri is an international organization of students and young professionals between the ages of 18 and 39. Its members are dedicated to four major objectives: To preserve the Italian culture and encourage the study of Italian and Italian American history. To foster the values of higher education and personal achievement in young Italian Americans. To facilitate career opportunities and networking relationships for young professionals. To promote a positive image of Italian Americans in the mass media and popular culture.

Half way down the west coast of Sardinia, far away from any of the great ancient and modern naval routes, looking over an open and powerful sea, we find the archaeological dig of Tharros. No more than four hundred steps away we can see the dark stones of the Natives' nuragic town squared thousands of years ago, then we meet the 'Tophet', an open air altar where ancient Punics sacrificed their children to the Gods, a few steps later a Phoenician house near a "Calidarium" of a roman public bath and a Semitic Temple. A few feet lower visitors can see traces of the Vandals that 400 years after Christ conquered Cartago and dominated Sardinia for 80 years, these last traces become confused with those of the Greek Byzantines that controlled the island for years after the Vandals and before the Ostrogots. On the north west coast of Tharros we find San Salvatore in Sinis, which appears more like an old American western town, and for that reason San Salvatore was a cinematographic set for many 1960's "spaghetti-western” movies. A small hypogeum temple is under the floor of the small Christian Church of San Salvatore. Down in the temple the ancient natives, many centuries before Christ, worshiped Babai (Sardus Pater), who later became Punic Sid Addir and then Mars; natives also worshiped Venus, the roman version of carthaginian Tanit and honoured a "Betilum", a Sacred Stone. Several centuries after Christ, people engraved on the walls of the Christian Church the supplication "rufu", Punic for "save us God!" but written in Roman letters (The supplication is a testimony of a language surviving centuries after its death). A thousands years after Christ an unknown wanderer engraved four Koran versicles near the Christian Altar.
The granite, porphyry and sandstones of the small and distanced Tharros tells us the same things that Fernand Braudel and in other verses Michel Serres who wrote about Rome and the Mediterranean. Tharros can be considered as a footnote on a page of Italian history in all global disorders: the little village of Tharros is a testimony that the Italy spirit feels at ease in the cosmopolis of all eras. Can we add other chaotic notes? Well! Even today, for example, if we ask ancient historians, Erodoto, Dionigi of Alicarnasso and Livio, for the geographic origins of the Etruscan People and about the great Etruscan leader Tyrrhenus who gave his name to the western sea of Italy. Or another example, the geneticist of today undoubtedly can find in the DNA of the inhabitants of Po river plain some traces of the soldiers, coming from the African Carthago, who passed over the Alps on the elephants of Hannibal; other peculiar traces in the Po region of Lomellina that still conserve today gastronomic idea and the kosher goose salami brought there by the Sephard Hebrews who ran away from Spain and arrived in this place 1700 years after the Carthaginians. Every war, every invasion like the history of the Venetian and Genoese colonies, in Judean, North Africa and the Black Sea, speaks often about interethnic intercourses that justifies the splendid hybrid robustness of the Italian DNA and explains the Italian exquisite and extraordinarily eclectic history of arts and cuisine. Are you confused? Well! Even the history of the Italian language sound strange: Italian appeared before 1000 ad. But existed as a second language at least until the First World War in 1915 - 1918! Ethnic, religious, artistic, gastronomic hybridizations and a national language as a second language! If you can forget the ideological fibs about roman tradition invented around the 1930's by Fascist historians and you read the real Italian history, engraved into any stone and in the Italian blood, you’ll realize that it is like reading the histories of many Diasporas and, certainly, this also true for the modern history of the Italians living in their country! Today, in a material world and cyberspace every day is more dominated by isolation, xenophobes, growing cultural and religious extremism, what we want is to give a small contribution of that cultural, geographic, gastronomic, artistic and political openness which the dispersed genesis of the Italicity has passed on to us. Welcome to the site of Loveitalia, a site for the Italian Commonwealth. .

A History of Italian-Canadian Writing by Joseph Pivato
1.The Other Italies know something important about global dispersion, about vast ambitions that have led to long and sober reconsiderations. For a century, they have been learning, often at the cost of great suffering, what it means to shift the center to the periphery, altering relationships of size and distance and place and time . The Other Italies, as they mature, look long and hard at what they have inherited. They offer surprising visions that can only be seen from their displaced centers . Such visions suit the Italian Commonwealth, which can no longer use a Large and Little or a Then and Now to organize its map, but needs to consult, with a fresh attention, the here, the there, and the everywhere."
" From the "The Italian Commonwealth" presented at "The Columbus People: An International Conference on 500 Years of Italian Migration to the Americas," Session V, "Italians and Italian Americans: Past and Future Prospects," Loeb Student Center, New York University, May 29, 1992.

3.Professor Viscusi writes in his preface to the poem: "Oration Upon the Most Recent Death of Christopher Columbus"
"This poem was written in the wake of Columbus Day at Brooklyn College. Here is how it happened. Familia Latina, an umbrella group of all the Latino associations on campus, planned a speak-out for October 14 [1992] to protest the celebration of the Columbian Quincentenary. Some members of the Italian American community on campus asked to take part in this speak-out, and I wrote this Oration to express some of our feelings on the occasion."
He explains, "Italians in America have been celebrating Columbus Day since 1866, and so we found the attack on our old hero very hard to bear. Still, hearing the pain of the many peoples who suffered in the European expansion into the western hemisphere, we were not only sympathetic, but we also recognized the sound of our own history. We did not feel ourselves to be conquistadores. Rather, we remembered the bitterness of the Italian revolution. . . . According to one estimate, the population of Italy at the triumph of the Risorgimento in 1861 stood at about 25 million. Between 1876 and 1985, just about that same number, 25 million, Italians were to leave Italy to live elsewhere in the world. When Italians parade in New York, they are remembering these dispossessed ancestors of theirs.
"We paraded in the name of Columbus. Tomorrow we may use some other name. But the history of need and of courage we celebrate will continue to march. And the burden of ancient sorrows that we remember we will carry for many generations. This burden, along with so many others, belongs to the history of the many peoples in this hemisphere, as it belongs to us."
In December, 2000, the Brooklyn College Television Center, in conjunction with the Department of Television and Radio, taped "An Oration Upon the Most Recent Death of Christopher Columbus" by Professor Robert Viscusi, director of Brooklyn College's Wolfe Institute.

Harry's Bar : The Life & Times of
the Legendary Venice Landmark
by Arrigo Cipriani (Author) Publisher: Arcade Books
For the weary traveler or isolated expat, there is nothing like finding that special bar or café that can make you feel welcome when you are far from home. While the desperate characters of Casablanca had Rick's Place, we have our favorites as well: Willi's Wine Bar in Paris, Jo's Bar in Prague, the Café Greco Antico in Rome, or Magaritsa in Sophia. Harry's Bar in Venice is such a spot--and one of the most famous at that. Just off the Palazzo San Marco, Harry's Bar has played host to such literary luminaries as Truman Capote and Ernest Hemingway, cinema heavyweights the likes of Orson Welles, and rich and powerful guests such as the Aga Khan. Harry's Bar is the biography of this institution. In this witty memoir, Arrigo Cipriani gives us the view from behind the bar, sharing anecdotes about the operation of the Venetian watering hole, disclosing secrets of mixacology, and passing on the old stories of his father, who cofounded Harry's in 1931.
Sirio: The Story of My Life and Le Cirque
by Peter J. Elliot (Author), Sirio Maccioni (Author)
Peter Elliot is the food critic for Bloomberg LP and host of Dine , which airs on Bloomberg Radio in the New York area and nationally on satellite radio. The show won a James Beard Foundation award in 1999. He lives in Litchfield, Connecticut, and is a graduate of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Book Description The inside story of one of the world's most legendary restaurants—told by the visionary who created it Sirio Maccioni is New York's most charismatic restaurateur—the brains, the energy, and the passion behind Le Cirque 2000. Now, for the first time, he reveals the incredible story of this landmark four-star restaurant, which has launched the careers of such world-class chefs as Jacques Torres and Daniel Boulud and won a host of prestigious awards, including the James Beard Foundation Restaurant of the Year Award (199-5) and "The Best Restaurant in the World" Reader's Choice Award from Condé Nast Traveler (200-3).
From a tough Tuscan childhood in 1930s Italy to the pinnacle of culinary success in the United States, Sirio recounts an eventful journey that is as magical and fantastic as Le Cirque itself. Throughout, 30 signature recipes and interviews with chefs (including Daniel Boulud, Michael Lomonaco, and Sottha Khunn), food writers (such as Ruth Reichl and Mimi Sheraton) and politicians, socialites, and celebrities (Rudy Giuliani, David Rockefeller, Bill Blass, and others) reveal Sirio's skill in handling the three rings of his unique culinary circus: its chefs, its clientele, and its cuisine.
"[Sirio] and his restaurant have come to symbolize all that is so cosmopolitan, so kinetic, so thrilling about New York. . . . Le Cirque remains both a gastronomic mecca and the premier social dining room." —James Villas, in Town & Country
Sirio Maccioni (New York, NY) is the owner of Le Cirque 2000 (New York, Las Vegas, and Mexico City) and Osteria del Circo (New York). Peter Elliot (New York, NY) is the host of the James Beard Award-winning radio show, The Bloomberg Executive Dining Guide.

Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines of Italy
by Joseph Bastianich, David Lynch
Hardcover - (April 2002) 320 pages
At one time, Italian wines conjured images of cheap Chianti in straw-wrapped bottles. More recently, expensive “Super Tuscans” have been the rage. But between these extremes lay a bounty of delicious, moderately priced wines that belong in every wine drinker’s repertoire. Vino Italiano is the only comprehensive and authoritative American guide to the wines of Italy. It surveys the country’s wine-producing regions; identifies key wine styles, producers, and vintages; and offers delicious regional recipes. Extensive reference materials—on Italy’s 300 growing zones, 361 authorized grape varieties, and 200 of the top producers— provide essential information for restaurateurs and wine merchants, as well as for wine enthusiasts. Beautifully illustrated as well as informative, Vino Italiano is the perfect invitation to the Italian wine experience.
About the Author: JOSEPH BASTIANICH is co-owner (with Mario Batali) of Babbo, Esca, Lupa, and Italian Wine Merchants, as well as (with Lidia Bastianich) Becco and Felidia, and has published extensively on the subject of Italian wine. He lives in Greenwich, Connecticut.
DAVID LYNCH is the wine director at Babbo and has been a senior editor at Wine & Spirits. He lives in New York City.

Saveur Cooks Authentic Italian : Savoring the Recipes and Traditions of the World's Favorite Cuisine
This gorgeous book is the latest in a series that also includes titles on American and French cooking. Because Italian food is undeniably America's favorite cuisine (whether or not it's the "world's favorite"), this one is likely to be even more popular than the earlier titles. Much of the material is drawn from Saveur, but it has been reorganized and mostly rewritten to make a cohesive cookbook rather than just a collection of previously published articles and recipes.

Betty Crocker's Italian Cooking by Antonio Cecconi, Betty Betty Crocker's New Italian Cooking CrockerEditorial Reviews Amazon.com This is not your mother's Betty Crocker. Put aside the ham and canned tomato sauce and get out the prosciutto and fresh plum tomatoes. From zuppa to dolce, this cookbook is filled with enticing, aromatic recipes compliments of chef Antonio Cecconi. You can almost smell the sharp Parmesan grated generously over Spinach Gnocchi with Nutmeg and the tang of fresh basil in Roasted Garlic and Onion Soup. Featuring recipes from Italy's 20 regions, Betty Crocker's Italian Cooking is a primo introduction to the varying tastes of Italy that's straightforward and easy to read. Recipes are referred to in English and shadowed by their Italian counterparts (what sounds more intriguing: Linguine with Spicy Chicken Sauce or Linguine con Pollo al Pepe?). Each page clearly lists the ingredients, the steps, prep and cook time, serving size, and nutrition guidelines. As a bonus, Cecconi proffers historical context for every recipe. He also suggests substitutions in case you're just not up to creating a homemade tomato sauce or roasting your own red peppers. Make sure to stock your pantry with Cecconi's list of Italian cooking essentials (extra-virgin olive oil, anchovy paste, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, and chicken broth) before attempting these recipes, then give Ravioli alla Bolognese a whirl. Try the Grilled Beef Short Ribs with Savory Lemon Sauce and a side of Potatoes with Artichoke Hearts and Olives, or maybe Pizza with Spinach, Prosciutto, and Goat Cheese. Follow it up with homemade tiramisu and piping hot espresso, or even a grappa to "aid the digestion and end the meal on a relaxing note." If you need help with meal planning, there are menus and suggested wine accompaniments in the back. --Dana Van Nest (www.amazon.com)

... [ editore Laterza, La civilta' della forchetta, Gianni Rebora, 1998]
(from medieval ages) … The chefs for the noble families, when they weren't writing cook books, would once in a while leave the service of the nobles and with their savings join a guild and open shops like taverns, hostels, inns or a "Rosticceria (Italian)" or what we today call a delicatessen. The art of cooking was reserved in many cities only to the delicatessens (in France, Traiterus). One could carry out their profession freely under the patronage of a noble family, (who would dare disturb Mr. Farnese, the patron of the great Palermo chef Carlo Nascia), you could practice your profession in a tavern or in a hostel, but to carry out the activities of a delicatessen meant that you had to be part of the very excusive guild of chefs. These chefs sold prepared dishes and offered catering services for large banquets. Nobles kept chefs at their estates, but it could happen that maybe a council of notaries or registrars of an institute like the Bank of San Giorgio would desire to have dinner together on their business premises, once or twice a year. On those occasions they would turn to the chef…. … a greatly increased salary, clears up the reasons for the obstacles placed on the entrance into the guild and the resistance on the part of its members, and the great consideration that the nobles held for the chefs. A journalist at the end of the medieval age wrote that the nobles "held in "pretio magno" their chefs"

Vincent Galluccio - Proprietor
GRISTINA GALLUCCIO: Vince was born and raised in Brooklyn's Cobble Hill neighborhood. Wine was always on the dinner table and each fall the smell of fermenting grapes wafted up through the floor from the basement. Like many first generation Italian families, the Galluccios bought grapes and made a little home wine in the basement. Vince fondly remembers helping both his grandfathers crush the grapes and tasting the fresh grape juice. "In our house, the children got a shot glass full of wine in the winter before they left for school, to make the blood strong. If we had a cold, it was hot wine with honey and spices, that was the remedy. Wine was always a part of the fabric of our daily lives." An international businessman who lived and worked for many years in Europe, first for IBM, then British Telecom, and most recently as managing director of Metromedia Fiber Network, Galluccio has long dreamed of owning a vineyard. He studied winemaking in Bordeaux and Burgundy. He looked at properties in Tuscany and southern France, but decided to come home to New York to fulfill the dream. (from the Vince Galluccio's site)

Miranda Unique Wine Styles - 2003 White Shiraz
(Riverina, NSW, Australia),
Fresh, fruity, crisp wine is ready to drink now as an aperitif or with fresh salads, seafood, light pasta or Asian food.
The Miranda Family Winemakers Australian origin dates back to 1938, when founder Francesco Miranda arrived from Naples with a passion and desire to build a winemaking empire.
His three sons Sam, Jim and Lou, carried on the tradition and broadened the company's interests across three states with wineries in the premium wine-producing regions of the Barossa Valley - South Australia, King Valley - Victoria and Riverina - New South Wales.
Now, the third generation, Sam, Sandra, Lisa and Catherine are further assisting the company's growth and marketing strategy.
The integration of the second and third generations strengthens Miranda's position as a family winemaker and commitment to quality premium wine production.
The family's wine success is mirrored in the domestic and international show circuit with over 1500 awards.
With over six decades of winemaking expertise, Miranda Family Winemakers will continue to produce premium quality, award-winning wines for consumers around the world.
This wine exhibits a bright deep salmon pink hue. The nose is abundant with soft floral, fresh berry and spicy aromas. The berry fruit flows through to the soft round palate, which finishes with natural acid crispness and lingering fruit characters.
The wine presents itself with a pale yellow color, a fruity bouquet, soft and balanced on the palate.

MONTECUCCO SANGIOVESE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Muschi Alti Montecucco San Giovese
(Campagnatico, Tuscany, Italia),
Grapes: Sangiovese 95% Cabernet Sauvignon 5%
Colour: The wine is brillant ruby red with purple tone.
Scent: Intensive fruitful aroma, with the taste of black currant and little red and black fruits - tipical matureness of the cabernet.
Taste: Full-bodied, in the mouth the wine express all the supported freshness, softly tannic, with a harmonic after-taste at the end.
The story of Silvestro Ottonelli's farm "Muschi Alti" is recent, but Montecucco's lands were cultivated from the era of the Etruscan, this mysterious civilisation who was built a city - Roselle - close to Campagnatico.
"Muschi Alti" originally was the part of the enormous farm "Stertignano", in the property of marquis Tolomei of Siena - an antique family, who was mentioned in the Divina Commedia of Dante. In the '50 years (as series of the division of the big estates ) "Muschi Alti" became independent.
In the last years Ottonelli family wanted to develop the wine-producing with the adhesion of the D.O.C.(Denominazione Origen Controllata) of Montecucco.
This wine is terrific with Chianina (pronounced kee-a-nee-na) and with American or Canadian Chiangus (A Chiangus is the result of the cross between a registered Chianina or Chiangus and Angus.)

Ferruccio has proposed to us a traditional antique Peimontese recipe
90% Fat-Free which anyone can easily prepare at home.
Bagna Caoda
Ingredient for four persons: Olive oil "extra virgin", 200 gr.
Salted anchovies
100 gr. of garlic
40 gr. of butter
Preparation: Wash and clean the anchovies and dry with a towel. After this peel the garlic and slice into very thin slices, removing any core that might be. Put these two ingredients into a terracotta pan and cover with olive oil and over a low flame cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Check that the garlic doesn't discolor and the anchovies dissolve completely: the sauce should be cooked but not fried. At the end add the butter and when it is melted place on the table the terracotta bowl with a candle under to keep it hot. A variety of sliced vegetables for example celery, peppers, carrots, chicory, white cabbage, cardoon and jerusalem artichoke can be dipped into the "bagna" Also cooked vegetables can be used

On the road to Great Tuscan Wines, Sassicaia, Ornellaia and so one.
ex "Osteria l'antico borgo" by Michele Innocenti . Bolgheri. Italy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michele Innocenti : «Normally the suggestions in my menus are dependent on the season and there are not always the usual second courses but some plates are classical trademarks for example "tagliata", the "fiorentina", "carne cruda al coltello" which come from various cuts of veal, exclusively from the "chianina" breed (a rare and particularly valued native to Tuscany). The pasta used for the first course is exclusively home made pasta with which we make a Maremma tortellone of about 10 cm x 5 cm. Stuffed with ricotta and spinach; the sweets are strictly homemade and we have a good selection of Tuscan cheeses, fermented in caves, walnut leaves, and vinsanto, served with acacia honey or vinsanto jelly which we make. These and other treats can always be found.
Recipe: Porcini Mushroom Soup.
Ingredients: 700 gr. Porcini mushrooms - 300 gr. Mixed seasonal mushrooms - 1 white onion - 1 carrot - some cloves of garlic - 1 stalk of celery
Preparation: Dice into small pieces the onion, carrot, garlic and celery place into pot with some extra virgin olive oil and sauté.
Add the mushrooms and simmer, add about a 1½ liters of hot water and continue to simmer over a low fire for about 1½ hour.
When cooked use a mixer to beat it into a dense cream.
For garnishing use stuffed mushrooms placed at the center of the plate with line of extra-virgin olive oil drawn in a spiral, finally add the bruschette (toasted bread) on the border of the plate.

Conscience, Profit
and Personal Responsibility
in Today's Business
by Jeffrey L. Seglin
Book Description: Will a clear conscience make you richer? Maybe not, but leaders at companies like Enron, Tyco and others found that bad behavior can bankrupt you. Recent events have shown us more clearly than ever that bad business decisions eventually take their toll on even the largest and wealthiest companies. In his new book, New York Times columnist Jeff Seglin takes you the through the difficult choices that companies make in the real world—how some do the right thing and others don’t. Find out how you can make good choices that make good business sense.

Nancy K. Austin, Co-author, A Passion for Excellence
"Jeff Seglin’s "intellectual honesty and non-preachy style makes you think hard about the right thing, and what it means for your own behavior. He is a great teacher whose course you never want to end, and whose work is a great gift."

"Jeff Seglin writes with passion, clarity and wisdom about the toughest issues facing the business community. We all ‘profit’ from this important and readable book." Ronald Thiemann, Harvard University

Joseph Badaracco, Professor of Business Ethics, Harvard Business School, author of Defining Moments and Leading Quietly
The Right Thing is just that: the right thing for today’s business managers who want to take ethics seriously from a moral and practical standpoint. Written. . . with thoughtfulness and an informed opinion.
Laura Nash, Senior Research Fellow, Harvard University
"Seglin sees both the ethical dilemmas as well as their proposed solutions in a clear and objective light, offering unparalleled honesty to the discussion of business ethics. . .Essential reading for all managers involved in evaluating the effectiveness of their company’s solutions to today’s problems of integrity in the workplace."
